A laptop, a mug and an open notebook on a table by a window

snap the board before it's erased

the prompt this whole guide is built on

Here's a photo of [my handwritten notes / the whiteboard] from [class]. Type it up as clean notes with headings and bullet points. Keep my wording where you can and don't add anything that isn't in the photo. If you can't read a word or a symbol, write (unclear) instead of guessing.

The professor filled the whiteboard and you got about half of it down before it got erased. Your own notes are a mess of arrows and half sentences that made total sense at the time.

Take a photo. AI chat tools can read pictures, handwriting included, and turn them into typed notes with headings you can actually study from. ChatGPT takes photo uploads on its free plan, but only a few a day. If you use a different tool, look for its upload button.

How to do it

  1. Take the photo straight on, in good light, with the whole board or page in frame. One page per photo works best.
  2. Upload it, paste the prompt above and fill in the class.
  3. Go through every (unclear) spot and fill it in from memory, a classmate or the slides.
  4. Compare the typed notes with the photo once. AI can misread numbers, symbols and formulas.
  5. Save the notes and the photo together, so you can always check the original.

Find the gaps

These are my notes from [topic]. List the spots where something seems to be missing or cut off, like a step that jumps or an arrow that points to nothing. Don't fill them in, just list them so I can ask about them.

Make them study ready

Add a short summary at the top of these notes, put the key terms in bold, and give me three questions I should be able to answer after this lecture. Don't change anything else.

that's it. go try it tonight.
