the prompt this whole guide is built on

I have to read this for [class]. Before I start, give me a 5 bullet outline, the 8 terms I need to know, and 3 questions my professor might ask about it. Tell me which sections matter most and which I can skim.

It's 40 pages, it's due tomorrow, and the first paragraph already lost you. You've read the same page three times and couldn't tell anyone what it said.

Reading every word at the same speed is the slow way. Get a map first: what the reading is about, which words matter and which parts you can skim. Then you read with a goal, and you actually remember it in class.

How to do it

  1. Upload the PDF or paste the text, then send the prompt above with your class name.
  2. Read the outline and the three questions before you read anything else. That's your map.
  3. Read the sections it says matter most, slowly, with a pen. Skim the rest.
  4. As you go, write a one line answer to each question in your own words.
  5. When you're done, write a short summary from memory and run the check prompt below.

Check what you got

Here's my summary of the reading in my own words: [paste it]. Tell me what I got wrong or left out and which section to reread. Don't rewrite my summary.

Stuck on one part

Explain this paragraph like I'm smart but new to the subject, then give me one everyday example of the idea: [paste the paragraph].

that's it. go try it tonight.
