Should you let AI remember things about you?

Memory can make an assistant more useful, but it is worth choosing what belongs in a conversation.

The Plainly version

Convenience is helpful when you get to choose what is remembered.

Technology, explained plainly. ↗

An assistant that remembers you prefer short answers can save you from repeating that request. One that recalls personal details you forgot you shared may feel less comfortable. Both reactions are reasonable.

‘Memory’ can mean different things. An app may save a specific preference, refer to past conversations, or keep your chat history for you to reopen. Those controls may be separate, and their names can change by product or account. Turning off one setting may not remove old chats or every stored detail.

Decide what is worth sharing

A style preference is different from a medical record, account number, or private family situation. Before adding sensitive details, ask whether the assistant needs them to do the task. Often a less specific version works: ‘Help me write a polite appointment request’ may be enough.

Review the controls

In ChatGPT, memory and related personalization controls are in Settings under Personalization. Available choices vary by plan and account. You can inspect what the product says it remembers and look for options to remove details or turn features off. Other assistants use different menus, so check their own help pages.

If you want a conversation that does not add to memory, look for a temporary or private chat option and read how that product handles history and retention. ‘Temporary’ does not necessarily mean nothing is retained anywhere for any length of time.

You can choose convenience for ordinary preferences and caution for personal matters. That is a better rule than treating memory as either all good or all bad.
